almost finished. want to do it in silver duracoat that i dont have yet, i hit it with some dollar store silver to get the affect. the upper hg retainers must be removed yet, but its pretty much done at this point.
call it my "romy G 3" as its a romy g kit built to emulate a g3.

trying a new medium on this one, bondo
the rear base is from roberts rtg (hk parts) it is a weld on base like they use in production.
i welded it on the dust cover, but instead of filling it with weld and smoothing it out as usual, i was afraid to clamp the dustcover into the mill due to how flimsy it is and couldnt come up with a satisfactory way of holding it (i usually build up w/ weld and "rough it out" in the mill, then grind it flat/contour the surface) so i thought WTF, ill fill it in with bondo.
there are a couple pin holes yet that are casting shadows and making it look a little wavy in the pic, but i plan on spraying on some durafil surface filler before the paint and sand it out smooth.
the dust cover actually fits very tightly on this one without modification, AMOF, its pretty difficult to remove, and the bolt has to be cycled to fully seat the retaining tab in the cover, so i dont expect to have a "wandering zero" problem. and it IS an ak action, so its not like ill be shooting bench rest matches with it

You seem to have some machining and manufacturing talents. Do you have your own welding and milling equipment? I always have small milling jobs that need a good place to farm out to. So many people won't accept gun work, it can be difficult to find the help we need. Plus, Raleigh isn't exactly an industrial center with plenty of good machine shops you like find in Pittsburg, Chicago, and Detroit.
I'm anxious to see how this project of yours turns out.

That is one wild build, so far so good. Keep posting the updated pics as you progress. Very inventive .

i have one of these:
http://www.grizzly.com/products/2-HP-Mill-Drill/G1006
and a lathe (or a few )
the mill has served me well for at least 2 yrs now. the only shortcoming i can complain about is that the head dosent tilt. i wanted to put some "factory style" serrations on the front of a 1911 slide i was working on (the saw- tooth angled kind) which would have been hella-simple if i could have tilted the head to put the cutter on an angle, but as it sits, i would have to put the slide on an angle, adjust the height of the cutter for each cut, as it would have to go higher or lower as the table is advanced, depending on direction, plus the compensating for the anount of movement on the slide per movement of the table, also because of the angle, so i just didnt do it.
other than that, i have yet to have a complaint.
ive said it before, grizzly has some good deals, but they also have some junk. i live about an hour from their pa showroom, so if i plan on making a large purchase, i go there to see it first (saves alot on shipping too!!)
i also have a hobart mig (yes mig, not wirefeed) handler 135 (???) its a 110v one you can plug in anywhere. easier in that you dont have to run a dedicated 220v outlet for it.
i hope to soon get a half decent cheaper (im thinking around $1200) tig welder.
farming out is a dirty word for me. i prefer to do my proj's all in house.
i also do woodworking. one of my last proj's there was an oak table top with the mason symbol inlaid in it in walnut and tiger maple. a friend who is a member of the lodge, who wanted it done, was there for most of the construction, i dont have a drum surface sander. he recommended a friend of his who has one could sand it for me and mentioned it to him. i told him in no uncertain terms "IF HE WANTS TO SAND IT, LET HIM MAKE THE F@#%ING TABLE!!!" he offered no more suggestions for the rest of the project!!!

yup, cetme bayo, wanted to put the g3 bayo on it to go w/ the g3 sights, but the spring extention that goes in the tube in the hk wont fit in front of the gasblock of the ak.
BUT...... my century g3's came w/ the cetme bayo instead of the g3 too!
if you noticed, i also kept the ak lug on it. i wanted to keep the g3 lug the same distance from the muzzle as it is on my g3 so it would index in the propper place on the flash hider. when i did so i noticed that i could also fit the ak bayo on AT THE SAME TIME!!! i just need to modify (enlarge the ring) an ak bayo to fit it.
